2007 SOUTH PACIFIC GAMES - SAMOA 2007

Back

All three of the doubles events were played today Men’s, Women’s and Mixed.

Mixed Doubles - In the early rounds there were a number of upset results and hard fought matches.

In a sensational series of upsets fourteen year old Tahitian Ocean Belrose and his partner 18 year old Rachel Hsiao won a tight five set match against Oceans older brother Alize Belrose and his partner Cyrine Sam.

The two youngsters had caused a number of upsets on the way. In the second round they defeated 3-0 the number one seeds Wang QI and Rujuan Qu. They next defeated Vanuatu ’s Ham Lulu and Priscila Tommy, in the semi-final they defeated fellow Tahitians Tinohau Klouman and Melveen Richmond 3-2.

Andrew quote “ Ocean was a member of the South Pacific Junior Talent Team that trained for three weeks in China earlier this year. His improvement between January and now is extraordinary. His partner Rachel also showed real determination to win’

Tahitian Table Tennis Federation President Gerald Huioutu ; It is the first time Ocean has competed in the South Pacific Games but the second for Rachel, Ocean only gained selection in the Tahitian team when at the final selection tournament he caused an upset to win his final match. With Rachel she is in fact a little fortunate to be here at this SPG , they have been some discipline problems with her in the past and I had to convince head coach Vitea to bring her to this event two days before the flight left.

We worked with a French coach in Yres Regnier who recommended that Ocean attend the Sports School in France but he Ocean said no.

I am extremely happy, in the 2003 SPG in Fiji we won two gold medals and here I would like to have the same results and perhaps more. This result makes me really happy as the policy is to develop young players for the future so we have a good team for a long time and this result encourages us to continue with this policy.”
