2007 SOUTH PACIFIC GAMES - SAMOA 2007

Back

There has now been two rounds of round-robin play. It is a best of nine match format with three players against three players with all matches being played out. No major upsets but in the first match of the day when Solomon Islands played Vanuatu, there were some nervous moments for Vanuatu’s Ham Frexley Lulu when he found himself down one set to nil and trailing 6 - 2 against a player with no current Oceania ranking and unknown quantity Solomons Islands player Polin Yang. Ham managed to turn the match around and went on to win three sets to one. Vanuatu had already secured a result and were leading six matches to zero before 2007 Oceania  ITTF Scholarship holder Yoshua Shing who has recently spent six months training in China was also pushed to five sets by Polin before winning three sets to two.

Team Fiji will be hoping that their number one women’s player and reigning Mini- South Pacific Games Gold medalist Qu Rujuan makes a full recovery from a blow to the head that she received while warming up before a deciding pool match. The incident happened when team mate Venetia Koi who was warming up right beside Rujuan accidently followed through to far on a backhand topspin and caught her teammate squarely on the side of the head. Play stopped for about twenty minutes before Rujuan was required to start play in the first match of the contest against Palau . She went on to win three sets to one against Palau ’s Remuu Watanabe with Fiji also winning the contest

Samoa who have been absent from International competition for over ten years played in both the Men’s and Women’s team event. In the women’s team event it was hard going losing 1-8 against Kiribati and 0-9 against New Caledonia . In there third match of the day they had a good 6-3 win over Tonga although they were unable to stop Tonga ’s Eseta VI winning her three singles. In the Men’s they were defeated by the experienced Fiji team  0-9.

New Caledonia , one of the favorites for the Men’s team event had win’s over both American Samoa (9-0) and Solomon Islands (9-0).

Tomorrow Kiribati men’s team have three matches against Vanuatu , New Caledonia and Solomon Islands . Quote from Kiribati team coach Kevin Reo ‘ We have had a one month training camp in Kiribati , one early morning session and one early evening session. We are well prepared for a big day tomorrow. In the Women’s team we have some younger players and it’s a very good experience for them.’
