David Powell shows promise
at the WCC

It was the first World Cadet Challenge for David Powell and the constant pressure needed each match is something that the top players in Oceania are just not accustomed too. In his group, even after losing the first two matches he was able to find something quite special for a win against the Japanese player Asuki Michi. The win put him in a tie for 1st position in his group, unfortunately after countback he was in the 3rd position and meant he just missed out in a spot in the top 16. Yet Still for a young guy from Australia with very little international experience he has shown that he has a very promising future ahead.

For Yoshua Shing who is just 12 years old and Maxime Batilliard only 13 years old and perhaps the two smallest players in the stadium it was all  a bit too difficult. Saying that however, they did show some glimpses of brilliance and will be much better for the experience. They will likely to be back next year and for the Oceania teams sake hopefully they can progress over the next year and play a major part for the team in the future.

Another difficult day for the Oceania players, yet again showing they are not too far away

Jenny Hung

A tough day is normal at the World Cadet Challenge. Every player is the best in the age Category for their region. Facing traditional table tennis regions like Europe and countries like Japan make it difficult for the under experienced Oceania Teams.

The boys team felt the pressure from Europe from the Start, they lost 0-5. For their next match against North America it seemed as though  the wind had been totally knocked out of the sails and there was just no petrol remaining, losing 1-4 and finally against Japan they were again outclassed 1-4. David Powell had played quite well throughout the day to pick up two good wins, the shining light for a tough day at the office.

For the girls however it was a slightly different story. Coming into the competition as perhaps the lowest ranked team it was always going to be difficult to defeat the two top teams in their group Europe and Japan . Against the North Americans though they were a real chance. Jenny Hung from New Zealand shone and took both of her of matches, while Nicole Low of Australia chipped in with the handy 3rd rubber to give the girls team their first ever victory in a teams match at the World Cadet Challenge.

A difficult day for the Oceania Team, no medals were to be won, but some promising performances from some of the young regional stars and as always invaluable experience for the push towards future international success
